People in Kentucky go to work each day and are supposed to perform their various job requirements. They are also supposed to receive the support from their managers and co-workers that they need to do their jobs. However, there are many people who do not receive this support and in fact receive the opposite. Many people endure various forms of sexual harassment while in the workplace.

This should not occur and needs to be stopped quickly. However, victims of sexual harassment can help this happen by taking certain steps to stop the harassment, hold the people harassing them accountable and protecting their rights.

How victims of sexual harassment can help protect themselves

It is important that victims of sexual harassment do not stay quiet. It can be very difficult and scary to come forward, but it is something that needs to be done. Victims of sexual harassment should take the following steps to properly deal with the harassment they experience:

  • Tell the harasser that their comments, actions or behavior are inappropriate, intimidating and that the harassment is unwanted and needs to stop
  • Document the times when people are sexually harassed, detailing what occurred and how they were harassed. This can be done by taking written notes. It also can be helpful to write down the names of co-workers or others who may have witnessed the harassment.
  • Report the harassment to the Human Resources department or manager, depending on the protocol stated in employee handbooks. If people are not getting the responses they need or expect, report to another person within the company who is in a position to take action.
  • If needed, contact the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and file a claim. There are time requirements for when the claim must be made in relation to the harassment and that information is provided by the EEOC. The EEOC will then complete an investigation and can make findings about the sexual harassment.

Unfortunately, there are still many people in the Lexington area who are being sexually harassed at work. It is important that it stops and that people do not continue to endure it. To help accomplish this goal, the victims should take certain steps to help protect themselves. Experienced attorneys understand the steps to be taken and may be able to help protect one’s rights.
